Maca is a small herbaceous plant that grows close to the soil,with a tuberous, bushing root in the form of a turnip.

Botanical Aspects:

Root: The root is swollen and has a conic shape; it is the plants subterraneous storage organ. It can grow up to 18 cm. long and have a diameter of 6.5 cm. It is also called a hypocotyl. However, the maca root is not a tuber; it just receives this floral formulation.


Ecotypes: Different ecotypes of maca exist, according to the color of the root, which can vary from light yellow to dark red, purple or black. The most frequent ecotype is yellow; the second most frequent type is red-white.


Origin And Distribution: Maca is an Andean crop cultivated in a very limited zone of the Central
Andes Sierra in Peru (Cerro de Pasco, Junín, Tarma, Jauja, Concepción and Huancayo). This
crop was domesticated approximately 2000 years ago in a climate of low temperatures and strong winds. Due to its elevation (4000 and 5500 meters above sea level) and the rough climate, few other crops can be cultivated on this soil with sediments of limestone and dark clay.

Properties :

Increases fertility with men because it enhances the functioning of the prostate and increases the quantity and motility of spermatozoids. Many women also see improvement or regularization in their hormonal cycle (menstruation).
Enhances sexuality, many patients notice an increase in their sexual power (with men) and an improvement of vaginal dryness or lack of feminine desire. Due to its content of the amino acid L-Arginine, maca widens the blood vessels (allowing more blood to flow to the pelvic zone). This may explain the sexual "improvement" with patients. Another explication is that maca helps us to feel less tired, which may also promote the regulation of testosterone levels.
Maca seems to have an influence on the pituitary and hypothalamus, while these glands, in turn, activate the ovaries, testicles, adrenal glands, thyroids and pancreas, making them function better. This could be an explanation as to why many people notice its benefits.
It heightens our level of mental and physical energy thanks to its many nutrients; this could also be due to the effect the plant seems to have on the suprarrenal glands. Some doctors also recommend maca in case of chronic fatigue.
Maca is a good weapon to fight osteoporosis (it contains calcium, silicium, Phosphor, etc.). It mineralizes and increases hormonal balance. It can be an alternative to hormonal therapies during the menopause (consult your gynecologist).
Patients who take or need medication for thyroid disorders (hypo - and hyperthyroidism) can consult their specialist in order to see whether the consump tion of maca may be beneficial, as it has traditionally been used to treat thyroid disorders.
